SWITZERLAND

From the beaches of the Cinque Terre, it was on to the mountains and into Switzerland. We traveled along tight, winding, hilly roads with wonderful scenery. Farms and lakes dotted the glacial wonderland on our ride to the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Our hotel was a rustic, chalet nestled between waterfalls and Alpine vistas. The air was cool and refreshing, which was pleasant for strolling the very small town. Before dinner, we were given a lesson on making cheese fondue. Fondue was served with tasty breads which we swirled in the creamy hot cheese. Our entree was a hearty dish of pork, potatoes, carrots and green beans, followed by dessert. The meal was memorable and filling. Entertainment for this night were two Alphorn players, dressed in traditional Swiss clothes. What a great introduction to fabulous Switzerland!
A beautiful farm house was seen from our hotel room. Inviting tables were waiting for us at Hotel Stechelberg.

Our second day in the Swiss Alps was amazing. First, we took a gondola and cable car ride 10,000 feet high amongst the mountains to Schitlhorn. The landscape was so beautiful, seeing the snow covered Monch, Eiger, and Jungfrau was a dream come true. The views are truly indescribable, so beautiful that they literally take your breath away. After checking out the amusing "James Bond" bathrooms we headed down to Birg for the Thrill Walk. The cable car ride took us down to the village of Murren where we grabbed a quick sandwich for lunch before joining up with Rick and company for a hike down to the base of the mountain. By this time, the sun was shining and it was warm outside, a stark contrast from the top of the mountain. The hike was pleasant as we passed through woods, fields, and tiny villages. Along the way, there was a small local shop that sold fresh cheeses and yogurt. Of course, we had to sample these goodies and they were so fresh and delicious! Once we reached the bottom, we walked along the waterfall adorned main road and headed to Trummelbach Falls. This unique spot has ten different waterfalls that were naturally carved inside the valley walls. A short bus ride took us back to the hotel where we ate a rustic country dinner and relaxed our feet. The day was unforgettable!
